I have had no issues picking up satellites. I would suggest taking a look to see if there are any firmware updates yet.

I would suggest a Russian GPS system (GLONASS - Global Navigation Satellite System) due to the US being able to flip a switch and encode all US gps systems. There might even be units that can switch from one to the other, kind of like sim cards and cell phones. Anyways, just a thought.

They could track it if you had it registered in your name. But it would be a process, Garmin would have to give them your info to do it legally. Other wise they can only track you if you 1) use the radio, 2) they recognize YOUR voice, and 3) can triangulate your location, requiring two radar systems set up in the relative area you are in. cells can be tracked, as long as the battery is in it. Bottom line, don't register the gps in your name, but in some fictional character or a dead realtive.

@webcaster: Thanks for your comment! I apologize, but I have a back-log of potential videos on the back burner at the moment. I can certainly do a video on stippling -- in fact, it will probably be sooner than later! Many blessings --GM

No signal is sent from a GPS unit nor is any authentication require to use GPS. Rather, GPS satellites continuously emit a beacon at regular intervals with a simple payload containing info about the satellites position, the current time (relative to the satellite) and an almanac w/info on the other GPS satellites. Your receiver then uses this information to calculate your position relative to the satellite. No one can use GPS to find you but other tech in this radio might.
